Baptisms

Baptisms

In Baptism, parents thank God for His gift of life, make a decision to start their child on the journey of faith, and ask for the Church's support.

Baptisms take place several times a year on a Sunday, either during the 10:45am service, or in the afternoon for larger groups of family and friends. In preparation for baptism we ask parents to attend services for at least a couple of months and attend a baptism preparation event.  It's important for parents to go with their child as they begin the journey of faith.

Baptism involves the pouring of water on the child's head as a sign of washing and cleansing - a symbol of being washed free from sin and beginning a new life with God.  Some parents prefer to have a service of Thanksgiving and Dedication for their child, rather than Baptism.  This ceremony can also be part of a 10.45am Sunday service.

Later on, Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey when you affirm the faith into which you were baptised, and the Bishop confirms you in that affirmation.  Confirmation services usually take place once a year, often at Christ Church or, sometimes we join with a neighbouring church.

Some adults choose to be baptised by full immersion in water, and this is always possible at Christ Church.  It usually forms part of a Confirmation service.
